The resolver already supported per-app placement — CFG_<APP>_STORAGE names a
location and appDir sends data, compose and config there — and 37 of 39 app
templates ship the field. What was missing was choosing AT INSTALL TIME. The
only routes were editing a config by hand before installing, or installing onto
the default disk and then `app move`ing it, which copies the data twice.
libreportal app install <app> --storage=<location>
and the App Center's existing storage dropdown, which travels inside
config_variables. Both resolve to one answer in storageChoiceFor, so there is a
single code path.
Ordering is the whole difficulty, and getting it wrong is quiet. installApp
copies the app template into appDir(), sources it, and later applies the form
overrides. The choice has to be live before the copy (or the directory is
created on the wrong disk), written into the config before the source (or the
template's "default" wins and every later appDir in that process returns the
primary root), and folded into config_variables (or the override pass writes
"default" back). Miss any one and the directory and its config disagree — which
resolves correctly only until something sources the config.
Refuses an unknown or unmounted location, an existing directory, and an app
whose template marks the field **READONLY** (fixed to the primary root because
other apps reach it by literal path — storageMoveApp already refuses to move
those, and installing one elsewhere is the same violation from the other end).
Three shipped bugs found making this work:
* updateConfigOption chose its write helper by comparing the path against
$containers_dir — the PRIMARY root only — so an app on any other registered
location took the manager branch and `sed -i` failed with exactly the
permission error the comment above that code describes. `app move` writes
the new location with `|| true`, so it reported a successful move while
leaving the config naming the old disk.
* storageLocationName resolved a location's name only from an in-scope
CFG_STORAGE_LOC_<id>_NAME, falling back to the bare id. That name is the
value CFG_<APP>_STORAGE is set to, so the generated dropdown offered
"location-1" as both label and value — a choice that does not resolve. Read
it from the location's config when the variable is not in scope.
* storageSyncAllAppComments was written for "the regen path" and never wired
into one. Every CFG_<APP>_STORAGE option list was frozen at install time, so
adding a drive did not make it selectable anywhere. Called from the storage
generator now, which runs exactly when those lists go stale — and extended
to app TEMPLATES, since an app not installed yet is precisely the one whose
install form needs to show which drives exist.
Verified on a live install with three locations: linkding and authelia on disk1,
ipinfo on disk2, fourteen on the default root, each config naming its own drive.

The main sweep — ~260 call sites across ~100 files move from string
concatenation on a single root to appDir/storageAppDirs/storageAppConfigs.
On a single-root install the resolved paths are identical, so this is a
no-op until a location is registered.
Enumerators were the interesting half. `for d in "$containers_dir"/*/`
appears in the menus, the registry/artifact scanners and the DNS setup —
and a shell glob cannot list a rootless 751 tree at all, which is the
same bug config_find_file.sh already documents in a comment. Routing them
through storageAppDirs (which enumerates as the owning user) fixes that
alongside the multi-root work.
Three places needed judgement rather than substitution:
db_app_scan.sh deletes database rows and port allocations for apps whose
folder is missing, and reaps "empty" app dirs. With a storage location
unmounted, every app on it looks exactly like that. Each of those
branches now gates on appStorageAvailable first — an app on an unplugged
drive is skipped with a notice, never deleted.
instance_create.sh rewrites cloned hooks so an instance touches its own
directory instead of the base app's. Its sed matched ${containers_dir}<type>,
which this sweep just replaced with $(appDir <type>) — so it would have
silently stopped redirecting, and an instance would have written to the
original's files (the adguard auth adapter case its own comment warns
about). Now matches both appDir forms, verified against bare, quoted,
unrelated-app, legacy and prose cases.
peer_shell/peer_pull streamed and extracted relative to the primary root.
Both now use the app's own root, and peer_shell keeps a single-root
fallback since it runs as a restricted SSH shell with no LibrePortal env.
Also fixes a pre-existing bug found on the way: webui_app_config.sh
tested "$containers_dir/frontend/data/last_update", one level short of the
real tree under the libreportal app dir, so the WebUI refresh trigger
after a config update has never once fired.

Not a flake. IP allocation lived in the else-branch of "did the database return
any rows for this app", so it ran only when the app held ZERO rows. An app with
even one row skipped the loop entirely, and a service without a row never got an
IP and never would. Its IP_TAG_<n> stayed unfilled, the literal IP_DATA_<n>
reached the compose, and docker refused the app with
invalid IPv4 address: ParseAddr("IP_DATA_3")
which surfaced as "no container started (image pull failed?)". Nothing repaired
it: reinstalling re-ran the same skip, so the app stayed broken until someone
uninstalled it and wiped the rows.
Partial state is not exotic — an app that GAINS a service in a later version hits
this on its very next install, because the old services still hold rows. That is
the case worth worrying about; Stoat only got there by being installed and
uninstalled repeatedly.
Reproduced deterministically by deleting one row from a healthy 16-service Stoat:
the install reported "No IP allocated for service: stoat-rabbit" as a NOTICE,
then "Success: Updated 15 IP tag system", then failed at compose. After the fix
the same broken state self-heals — "Allocated IP: stoat/stoat-rabbit" — with no
uninstall.
Three more bugs in the same path, all found while tracing it:
- ipFindAvailable tested pool membership with a substring match against the
newline-joined list of allocated IPs, so .4 read as taken whenever .46 or .147
existed. Demonstrated: with 3 addresses allocated it excluded 5. Harmless at
low occupancy, but it silently shrinks the pool as it fills and would report
exhaustion early. Now an exact whole-line match.
- ipFindAvailable set available_ip="" on an exhausted pool and carried on to
index the empty array, where RANDOM % 0 is a division-by-zero that would bury
the real message. ipAllocation did the same and still ran its INSERT, writing
a row with an empty resource_value — which then satisfied "this service has an
allocation" forever after, making the service unrepairable. Both now return.
- first_allocated_ip was only assigned inside the allocate branch, so on every
reinstall (where rows already exist) it came out empty and the trusted-domains
list shipped with a hole. Now taken from the mapping.
An unfilled tag is also an error rather than a notice now: the compose is
unshippable at that point, and reporting "Success: updated 15 IP tags" is how
this reached the user as a confusing pull failure several steps later. The
install backstop no longer guesses "(image pull failed?)" either — that guess
was written for one cause and misdirects for every other.
Verified: clean install allocates all 16 with no unfilled tags, a deliberately
broken row self-heals, and no duplicate IPs exist across any app.

Matches b562059 — the fourteen mapping entries added alongside the slot rename
were written before that landed and ran 88-100 chars against a median of 44.
For a generic app (no traefik files, not libreportal) fixPermissionsBeforeStart
prints nothing, so the "Updating file permissions before starting" step showed
its header followed by an empty line — looking like it did nothing. Add an
isSuccessful line after the call so the step reports like every other one.

An image-pull failure (e.g. the MTU-EOF black hole) left apps marked
installed+active with no container: the compose `up -d` failure was invisible
because (a) checkSuccess read $? after `_rc=$?`, always printing "✓ Started",
and (b) the exit code is dropped across dockerComposeUpdateAndStartApp →
dockerComposeUpdate → dockerComposeRestartAfterUpdate, and installApp never
checked it — so post-install integrations ran and set status=1 regardless.
- up_app.sh: restore $? to the compose exit before checkSuccess (both rootless
and rooted) so a failed `up -d` is reported as an error + logged, not "✓".
- app_install.sh: after `up`, reality-gate on the app's compose project having
at least one container (ps -a, so a slow-to-start container still counts).
If none exists, print a clear failure, skip _appPostStartIntegrations (which
is what records the app + sets status=1), and return non-zero.
Verified: the gate query passes for a running app (libreportal) and refuses
apps with no container (navidrome/ipinfo after their pulls EOF'd).

Finishes the installApp refactor started in d941f59 (Wave A). Every app
whose <app>.sh was either pure boilerplate (Wave B) or boilerplate +
small custom logic (Wave C) now routes through the generic driver in
scripts/app/install/app_install.sh; bespoke logic moved to declarative
hooks in containers/<app>/scripts/<app>_install_hooks.sh.
Net: ~4,000 lines of duplicated 10-step sequence gone. From 31 per-app
.sh files (pre-Wave-A) down to 2 intentional keepers.
DELETED outright (pure boilerplate — driver replaces them identically):
jellyfin, mastodon, focalboard, ipinfo, speedtest, dashy, invidious,

webuiLibrePortalUpdate + bootstrap-time suppression of
menuShowFinalMessages don't fit the generic flow.
Driver change — scripts/app/install/app_install.sh:
Moved monitoringToggleAppConfig "$app_name" "docker-compose.yml" from
the post-start integrations block into the install body at post-compose
(right after dockerComposeSetupFile, before docker-compose up). The
toggle edits the compose file on disk — running it after start meant
the container had already been brought up with the unmodified compose,
so the metrics endpoint wouldn't reflect CFG_<APP>_MONITORING until
the next restart. Matches the original ordering in every per-app .sh
that used to call it inline.

(POST /control/install/configure) so the admin doesn't
click through five pages, then pins the admin bind back
to 0.0.0.0:3000 (matches the compose mapping) and health
checks. _install_message_data echoes user/password to
menuShowFinalMessages.
authelia — _install_pre requirements; _install_post_compose copies
configuration.yml + users_database.yml, substitutes
theme/domain/host, generates JWT/session/storage secrets,
toggles monitoring on configuration.yml; _install_post_start
argon2-hashes the admin password via the container, writes
users_database.yml, restarts; _install_post echoes creds.
traefik — _install_pre prompts for the LE email if CFG_TRAEFIK_EMAIL
is unset; _install_post_compose copies static + dynamic

$containers_dir/prometheus/prometheus/; _install_post_start
sets 0777 on storage dirs so the container TSDB can write
regardless of host UID mapping.

grafana_storage.
gluetun — _install_post_start refreshes the provider snapshot,
reattaches every routed app (the netns container ID is
stale after gluetun gets recreated), then prompts to
onboard any existing apps.

trilium / searxng (wait-for-first-boot-config), gitea (Prometheus
bearer token sync), headscale / unbound (config copy), moneyapp

Manifest + arrays regenerated. Verified end-to-end:
- bash -n on every hook file + the driver: clean
- Each hook file sources cleanly in a subshell, exposes only the
intended functions, flagged lazy-loadable (not eager)
- Smoke-stubbed install run for jellyfin (pure), nextcloud (pure),
bookstack (hooked), crowdsec (kept): correct dispatch in all cases —
deleted apps route to installApp, kept apps still hit their real
function

When no install<App>() function exists, fall through to
`installApp <app_name>` instead of erroring. So an app with no .sh
at all becomes a zero-byte addition — drop in <app>.config +
docker-compose.yml + <app>.svg, done.
containers/linkding/linkding.sh:
Deleted (canary). Linkding's body was 100% standard sequence;
fallback handles it identically. Smoke-tested with stubbed helpers
— dispatcher fires, generic runs full flow, monitoring integration
+ final-message hook plumbing all intact.
Wave B (next): delete the .sh for every other 'pure-boilerplate' app
(~15 candidates per the survey). Wave C: extract custom logic from
the 7 fat apps into hooks before deleting their .sh.
