Phase 2 and 4 of docs/roadmap/storage-locations.md. Apps can now be
placed on a location and moved between them.
CFG_<APP>_STORAGE lands in all 37 app templates, holding a location NAME
rather than a path: names survive a migrate to a host with different
disks, paths do not. The 11 infrastructure apps that other apps reach by
literal path (traefik, prometheus, grafana, adguard, gluetun, crowdsec,
headscale, dashy, pihole, unbound, wireguard) are pinned. libreportal
itself never gets the key — it is pinned structurally by webuiDir.
Pinning needed no second config key. "Pinned" is not a fact about a value,
it is a statement about whether the field may be edited, so it goes in the
comment beside **ADVANCED** and **DEV** as **READONLY**, and the field
factory renders those disabled. That marker earns its keep beyond this
feature: derived fields already warned in prose that editing them does
nothing (crowdsec.config:72) next to a perfectly editable input.
storage_app_config.sh keeps the comment honest — it carries the resolved
path for hand-recovery and regenerates the dropdown from the registry, but
only writes when something actually changed, since the app .config is
user-editable and lives in the container-owned tree.
app move stops the app (a live copy of a running Postgres is a corrupt
copy), snapshots it, copies, verifies, and only then removes the source.
The copy runs in libreportal-ownership because it must: app data holds
rootless sub-UID files the manager can neither read nor recreate.
Verified against two real ext4 filesystems that a cross-device move
preserves uid 231141 and the payload, and that the source survives every
refusal path — unregistered destination, the WebUI app, a traversal in the
app name, and an occupied destination.
Task titles registered in both tables, with a specific rule so a move
renders as "Nextcloud - Move to bigdisk" rather than the generic fallback
dropping the destination. lp-task-names could not be run to confirm — it
borrows the WebUI container's node and no containers are running.

The main sweep — ~260 call sites across ~100 files move from string
concatenation on a single root to appDir/storageAppDirs/storageAppConfigs.
On a single-root install the resolved paths are identical, so this is a
no-op until a location is registered.
Enumerators were the interesting half. `for d in "$containers_dir"/*/`
appears in the menus, the registry/artifact scanners and the DNS setup —
and a shell glob cannot list a rootless 751 tree at all, which is the
same bug config_find_file.sh already documents in a comment. Routing them
through storageAppDirs (which enumerates as the owning user) fixes that
alongside the multi-root work.
Three places needed judgement rather than substitution:
db_app_scan.sh deletes database rows and port allocations for apps whose
folder is missing, and reaps "empty" app dirs. With a storage location
unmounted, every app on it looks exactly like that. Each of those
branches now gates on appStorageAvailable first — an app on an unplugged
drive is skipped with a notice, never deleted.
instance_create.sh rewrites cloned hooks so an instance touches its own
directory instead of the base app's. Its sed matched ${containers_dir}<type>,
which this sweep just replaced with $(appDir <type>) — so it would have
silently stopped redirecting, and an instance would have written to the
original's files (the adguard auth adapter case its own comment warns
about). Now matches both appDir forms, verified against bare, quoted,
unrelated-app, legacy and prose cases.
peer_shell/peer_pull streamed and extracted relative to the primary root.
Both now use the app's own root, and peer_shell keeps a single-root
fallback since it runs as a restricted SSH shell with no LibrePortal env.
Also fixes a pre-existing bug found on the way: webui_app_config.sh
tested "$containers_dir/frontend/data/last_update", one level short of the
real tree under the libreportal app dir, so the WebUI refresh trigger
after a config update has never once fired.

Three apps were instanceable and the rest were silent, so the feature
looked far narrower than it is. Every app has now been checked against
the two rules instance_create.sh enforces, and the answer recorded in
its config rather than left unset.
32 apps are instance-safe and now say so. Six are not, and each says why
in its own words instead of being indistinguishable from an app nobody
had reviewed:
pihole a DNS server must own port 53
unbound a resolver must own its fixed 5335
stalwart a mail server must own 25/465/587/993
traefik must own 443, and one Traefik routes every other app
prometheus node-exporter and cadvisor carry no "prometheus" prefix
stoat pins 7881, and database/redis/rabbit/minio carry no prefix
The first four are genuinely one-per-host: the port is not arbitrary, it
is the protocol. The last two are compose-identity problems and could be
fixed by prefixing those service names, which is a change to make
deliberately rather than in passing.
Recorded as an explicit false with a reason, not left unset, so the next
person reads a decision instead of an absence. The audit was verified not
to pass anything vacuously: every app resolves at least one service name,
so no app reached "eligible" merely because nothing was found to check.

Installing rocketchat failed with
invalid IPv4 address: ParseAddr("IP_DATA_2"): unable to parse IP
ipUpdateComposeTags allocates one IP per SERVICE_TAG_N annotation and fills
IP_TAG_i only where SERVICE_TAG_i exists. The four new apps tagged only their
primary service, so every sidecar — matrix's postgres, mattermost's postgres,
rocketchat's mongo, and fifteen of stoat's sixteen — kept a literal IP_DATA_n
in the deployed compose and docker refused to create the container.
Tag every service that carries an ipv4_address, index-aligned with its IP_TAG.
For stoat that also meant moving caddy from SERVICE_TAG_1 to _6 so the indices
line up with the IPs rather than the reading order.
mastodon had the same latent break (IP_TAG_2 and _3 untagged) and is fixed the
same way — it would have failed on first install for the same reason.
SERVICE_TAG carries the compose *key*, not container_name: 'libreportal app
restart <app> <service>' passes it to 'docker compose restart', which only
understands keys.

VAPID: the two values are the halves of one P-256 keypair, not independent
secrets — the browser verifies that a push is signed by the private key matching
the public key it subscribed with. The RANDOMIZED* generators mint each
placeholder on its own, so they produced two unrelated strings and web push could
never have worked. Generate the pair in mastodon_install_post_setup the way stoat
already does, encoded as Mastodon's webpush gem expects: unpadded URL-safe base64
of the 32-byte private scalar and the 65-byte uncompressed public point, sliced
out of the SEC1 DER. Verified by rebuilding the key from the emitted private half
and re-deriving the public point — openssl accepts it and the point matches.
Generated once and never rotated (rotation would invalidate every subscription),
but a pair of the wrong shape is replaced, so an install carrying the old
unrelated strings heals itself on next install — their public half is 42 chars
where a real point is 87.
Slots: CFG_<APP>_DB_PASSWORD -> CFG_<APP>_DB_PASSWORD_1 and likewise for
DB_ROOT_PASSWORD, across mastodon, owncloud, mattermost, matrix, nextcloud and
bookstack, so a database credential is always a numbered slot and a second one is
just _2. Renaming a key means reconciliation drops the old and adds the new
holding its placeholder, so an existing install regenerates unless the value is
carried over first — documented, including that the old file survives as
.<app>.config.bak.

Five apps (mastodon, owncloud, mattermost, matrix, stoat) took their generated
secrets from the compose-side generator tags PASSWORD_TAG_<n>/RANDOM_TAG_<n>/
HEX_TAG_<n>/VAPID_TAG_<n>. Those mint a fresh secret on every templating run, so
a reinstall handed the app a new database password while its data volume kept the
one initdb was given, and the app came back up unable to open its own database.
Move them to <app>.config as RANDOMIZED* placeholders, reaching the compose via
the #LIBREPORTAL|<APP>_<KEY>_TAG| mechanism tags_processor_app_config_values
already provides. No new handler: the tag name is derived from the config key, so
this is a config line plus a tag per secret. Generation is unchanged — still
random on first install; the value is now remembered instead of re-rolled.
Also fixes two things this exposed:
- The RANDOMIZED* replacers matched unanchored. `sort -u` orders slots lexically
(1, 10, 11, 2), so slot 1's pattern rewrote the prefix inside slot 10's
placeholder and slots 10+ ended up holding slot 1's secret with a digit glued
on — derivable, and invisible because the values weren't byte-identical.
Anchoring with \b makes match order irrelevant. Verified at 20 slots across
all four placeholder types: 64 keys, 64 distinct values, no prefix collisions.
- generateRandomPassword drew from base64 without constraining the mix; measured
over 2000 draws, 1 in 40 contained no digit at all. Retry until the result has
both a digit and a letter, bounded so a pathological length can't spin.
owncloud gains a fix in passing: its compose seeded the admin account from
PASSWORD_TAG_2 while the WebUI displayed CFG_OWNCLOUD_ADMIN_PASSWORD, which was
generated separately and never used. Both now read the same value.

The tag manager reads `#LIBREPORTAL|<TAG>|<VALUE>` and takes <VALUE> as the
current literal to search for on that line, so it must equal the string in the
line body. Mastodon used `unconfigured` as the annotation value against bodies
like `PASSWORD_TAG_1_DATA` — nothing matched, nothing was ever substituted, and
the placeholder shipped as the live database password, SECRET_KEY_BASE, OTP
secret and VAPID keypair.
Nothing caught it either: `unconfigured` doesn't match `_DATA`, so
tagsManagerGetTagState reported the tags as configured, and the stale-tag gate
in dockerComposeUp (which tests the annotation value against
`^[A-Z][A-Z0-9_]*_DATA(_[0-9]+)?$`) let the app start.
Adopt the convention every other app already uses — body placeholder identical
to the annotation value, `<KIND>_DATA_<n>`. All 11 tags now substitute, the app
and postgres services agree on the same generated credentials, and an unfilled
tag is visible to the pre-start gate.
Existing 0.1.0 installs keep their literal credentials until re-installed, and
their Postgres was initialised with them, so a plain re-install desynchronises
the compose from the volume. Document both recovery paths in upgrade notes.

Stepping 31 -> 32 -> 33 is arithmetic. Knowing 32 FINISHED before
touching 33 is the whole safety story, and it is invisible from outside
the app: Nextcloud runs its migration on boot and sits in maintenance
mode — or fails halfway — while Docker reports the container perfectly
healthy. Advance a rung there and a migration has been skipped on live
data.
Contract: <app>_upgrade_verify <app> <expected-tag> <deadline> -> 0
Returns 0 ONLY on positive confirmation that the app serves at the
expected version with nothing outstanding. Unhealthy, indeterminate and
timed-out all return non-zero — uncertainty is a failure, not a maybe,
because the alternative gambles with data.
nextcloud `occ status`: installed, NOT in maintenance, no pending DB
upgrade, and the running major matches the tag. Maintenance
mid-migration is expected and simply keeps waiting.
mastodon /health serving, ZERO "down" rows in db:migrate:status, and
the version from /api/v1/instance matching. /health alone is
insufficient — Puma answers before migrations finish.
stalwart /healthz/ready (per its documented probes), required to hold
stable rather than flash once. Weaker by design: the probes
confirm serving but report no version, and the file says so
rather than implying more.
updaterVerifyGeneric (running + healthy + no restart during a settle
window) is the fallback for everything else, and is explicitly NOT
sufficient to justify climbing a rung — the engine will refuse to ladder
an app with no declared verifier.
9 tests drive the dangerous states directly: maintenance mode, pending DB
upgrade, and a wrong major all correctly REFUSE to verify; clean states
pass. Those three negatives are the ones that would have corrupted data.

Both templates were stale in different ways, and the new tag enumeration
surfaced it: nextcloud sat on 31-fpm-alpine with 34 out, mastodon on
v4.2.0 with v4.6 out.

The mastodon one was the real problem: v4.2.0 is an EXACT patch pin, so
it never moved at all — no security patches, ever. v4.6 is a moving
minor-line tag (the same shape as stalwart's v0.16), so auto-update now
delivers patches within the line.
Deliberately NOT floated to :latest or :stable. Both projects require
stepped upgrades — Nextcloud in particular refuses to skip a major — so
a tag that crosses majors on its own would break the app on a routine
container recreate. A major-pinned, patch-moving tag is the correct
shape here, not a limitation.
Verified against the registry: all three pinned apps now report nothing
newer, and each tag still moves (v0.16 2026-08-10, 34-fpm-alpine
2026-08-03, v4.6 2026-08-06).
Templates only, so this changes NEW installs. Existing installs keep
their tag and will now be told a newer line exists.

Adds the decision half of the app updater. Detection (P2) and the
snapshot-first apply/revert (P3) were already real, but nothing ever
pressed the button — every update waited for a click.
CFG_<APP>_UPDATE_TYPE=auto|manual per app, default auto (33 templates)
CFG_UPDATER_AUTO=true|false master switch, default true
updaterAppPolicy resolves the two the way backupResolveStrategy already
resolves backup strategy: the global switch can only make things more
manual. updaterApplyAuto runs at the end of `updater check` and enqueues
the ordinary updater_apply task for each auto app that has an update —
never applies inline, so an automatic update is the same code path, task
log, History entry and Roll back button as a manual one.
Safety: each attempt stamps its target digest under generated/auto/, so a
build that fails is rolled back and then left alone rather than retried on
every scan; in-flight updater tasks are skipped so scans can't stack.
Tracked end to end: updates.json carries each app's resolved update_type,
History entries carry trigger=manual|auto. The WebUI says whether updates
install themselves, chips only the apps that opted out, labels automatic
history, and — since an auto app's pending update needs no decision — keeps
it off the Overview board's "Needs action" view.
Also fixes artifactApplyAuto enqueueing without --detach: it runs inside
the single-threaded task processor's own poll, so following the new task in
the foreground waits for a task that cannot start until it returns.

Add a `#LIBREPORTAL|<APP>_VERSION_TAG|<current-tag>` sentinel to each app's
anchor (`<slug>-service`) image line, so a `CFG_<APP>_VERSION` config drives
that tag through the existing tagging system — the config becomes the source,
the compose tag is derived (like ports/IPs/domains already are). This is the
"install/pin a specific version" knob.
- Placeholder is the literal current tag (e.g. `31-fpm-alpine`), NOT a `*_DATA`
token: an unset var leaves the line untouched (inert comment, keeps the real
tag) and never trips the up_app stale-tag scanner.
- Only the anchor line is tagged (sidecars mariadb/redis/nginx stay
tracked-by-digest, not user-version-picked). ollama correctly targets
`ollama/ollama`, not the companion open-webui.
- Untagged anchors normalized to `:latest` (semantic no-op) so they're
templatable too. The manager (libreportal) is skipped — it updates via its
release channel, not a docker tag.
32 apps wired. Verified: CFG_NEXTCLOUD_VERSION=32 → `nextcloud:32` (prefix
preserved, idempotent, sidecars untouched); all compose files still valid YAML.
Inert until a version config is set, so no behaviour change on existing installs.

Finishes the installApp refactor started in d941f59 (Wave A). Every app
whose <app>.sh was either pure boilerplate (Wave B) or boilerplate +
small custom logic (Wave C) now routes through the generic driver in
scripts/app/install/app_install.sh; bespoke logic moved to declarative
hooks in containers/<app>/scripts/<app>_install_hooks.sh.
Net: ~4,000 lines of duplicated 10-step sequence gone. From 31 per-app
.sh files (pre-Wave-A) down to 2 intentional keepers.
DELETED outright (pure boilerplate — driver replaces them identically):

webuiLibrePortalUpdate + bootstrap-time suppression of
menuShowFinalMessages don't fit the generic flow.
Driver change — scripts/app/install/app_install.sh:
Moved monitoringToggleAppConfig "$app_name" "docker-compose.yml" from
the post-start integrations block into the install body at post-compose
(right after dockerComposeSetupFile, before docker-compose up). The
toggle edits the compose file on disk — running it after start meant
the container had already been brought up with the unmodified compose,
so the metrics endpoint wouldn't reflect CFG_<APP>_MONITORING until
the next restart. Matches the original ordering in every per-app .sh
that used to call it inline.

adguard — _install_post_start drives the wizard's HTTP API
(POST /control/install/configure) so the admin doesn't
click through five pages, then pins the admin bind back
to 0.0.0.0:3000 (matches the compose mapping) and health
checks. _install_message_data echoes user/password to
menuShowFinalMessages.
authelia — _install_pre requirements; _install_post_compose copies
configuration.yml + users_database.yml, substitutes
theme/domain/host, generates JWT/session/storage secrets,
toggles monitoring on configuration.yml; _install_post_start
argon2-hashes the admin password via the container, writes
users_database.yml, restarts; _install_post echoes creds.
traefik — _install_pre prompts for the LE email if CFG_TRAEFIK_EMAIL
is unset; _install_post_compose copies static + dynamic
configs, wires CFG_TRAEFIK_DASHBOARD_ACCESS (local-only /
domain-only / public), toggles monitoring on traefik.yml,
then traefikUpdateWhitelist + traefikSetupLoginCredentials.
wireguard — _install_pre host-conflict guard (/etc/wireguard/params);
_install_post_compose persists CFG_WIREGUARD_SUBNET,
resolves WG_HOST (domain+traefik → host_setup, else IP),
runs runAppCfg wireguard-ip-forward; _install_post_start
restarts after wg-easy installs its iptables rules.
jitsimeet — _install_post_setup downloads the tagged release zip from
GitHub; _install_post_compose mass-edits the .env and runs
gen-passwords.sh; _install_post_start rewrites nginx
default site to usedport1/2 + restart.
prometheus — _install_post_compose seeds prometheus.yml under
$containers_dir/prometheus/prometheus/; _install_post_start
sets 0777 on storage dirs so the container TSDB can write
regardless of host UID mapping.
grafana — _install_pre requirements; _install_post_start 0777 on
grafana_storage.
gluetun — _install_post_start refreshes the provider snapshot,
reattaches every routed app (the netns container ID is
stale after gluetun gets recreated), then prompts to
onboard any existing apps.
+ the smaller bookstack-shape extractions for owncloud (version scrape),
trilium / searxng (wait-for-first-boot-config), gitea (Prometheus
bearer token sync), headscale / unbound (config copy), moneyapp
(Auth.js AUTH_URL), onlyoffice (compose-resolved user/pass into the
final message).
Manifest + arrays regenerated. Verified end-to-end:
- bash -n on every hook file + the driver: clean
- Each hook file sources cleanly in a subshell, exposes only the
intended functions, flagged lazy-loadable (not eager)
- Smoke-stubbed install run for jellyfin (pure), nextcloud (pure),
bookstack (hooked), crowdsec (kept): correct dispatch in all cases —
deleted apps route to installApp, kept apps still hit their real
function

Now that uid auto-discover is in (d424473), adding more apps is just naming the
container + path — no uid guessing. Four more apps get complete backups of their
private data dirs (previously: incomplete on the file side because libreportal
can't read sub-UID-owned content from the host).
- linkding-service -> /etc/linkding/data (overlaps with sqlite db, same pattern as gitea — dump replays over the captured tree on restore, harmless)
- vaultwarden-service -> /data (same overlap pattern)
- headscale-service -> /var/lib/headscale (same overlap pattern)
- mastodon-service -> /mastodon/public/system (uploads; postgres handled separately by backup.db)
Coverage now: nextcloud, bookstack, gitea, owncloud, linkding, vaultwarden,
headscale, mastodon. Skipped jellyfin — it has multiple internal sqlite DBs and
no backup.db declared; adding just backup.files without backup.db / backup.live
wouldn't activate live capture, and adding backup.live blind could yield torn
sqlites. That one wants proper DB declaration first.

Adds CFG_<APP>_BACKUP_STRATEGY (default auto) so an app's backup strategy can
be overridden from its Advanced config tab, taking precedence over the global
default. Added to the 10 live-capable apps, so the dropdown's 'live' option only
appears where it actually works.
- backupResolveStrategy now checks the per-app override before the global value.
- backupAppLiveCapable / backupAppStrategyOptions expose capability + the valid
option set; predicate helpers hardened with explicit returns so they behave
identically with or without shell errexit.
- BACKUP_STRATEGY field mapping (select, advanced) renders the dropdown.

- Add libreportal.backup.db labels to the MariaDB/Postgres apps (nextcloud,
owncloud, bookstack, mastodon, invidious) so they back up live + consistent.
- If a declared dump cannot be taken (DB down, wrong path), the backup falls
back to stop-snapshot-start for that run instead of snapshotting torn data —
a misconfiguration degrades to 'safe with downtime', never to 'unsafe'.

The static per-app CFG_<APP>_HOST_NAME is gone. host_setup (the app's
canonical FQDN, feeding the legacy single DOMAINSUBNAME_DATA used by app env
vars, the app URL and trusted-domains) is now derived from the app's primary
Traefik port's subdomain: first recommended port, else first Traefik port;
@/root -> apex, set -> sub.domain, empty -> app-name. Removes HOST_NAME from
all app configs, the config-form field mapping (Hostname), the dead
headscale stub, and wireguard.sh (now uses host_setup). Completes the move to
dynamic per-port subdomain routing.

Replace the static one-host-per-app model with per-port routers: each
Traefik-managed port carries a subdomain (12-col PORT format) and gets a
DOMAINSUBNAME_TAG_<n> host, so one container can serve unlimited hosts.
tagsProcessorPortSubdomains stamps per-port hosts (subdomain @/empty = apex,
multi-level allowed); tagsProcessorPortRouterBlocks comments out
# TRAEFIK_PORT_<n>_BEGIN/END blocks for non-Traefik ports so unfilled
placeholders never ship (mirrors GLUETUN_OFF). Convert all 27 router apps
(subdomains seeded from HOST_NAME; headscale admin. prefix -> subdomain).
